EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION
The trail hugs the north shore of a 600-acre coastal salt marsh, threading through reeds, salt grass, and groves of eucalyptus before opening onto wide lagoon views. It is flat and easy in both directions, which means you can move as fast or slow as the birds will allow. Egrets, herons, and California least terns work the shallows year-round; in winter, migratory shorebirds pack the mudflats. The Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation runs a small nature center at the trailhead with free maps and docent walks on weekends. Bring binoculars and go early before the sun climbs.
OPERATOR STORY
The Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation is a volunteer-driven nonprofit that has protected and stewarded this 600-acre ecological reserve since the 1980s, when 90% of California's coastal wetlands had already been lost. The foundation organized a major dredging effort in the 1990s to restore tidal flow and reverse years of siltation, bringing the lagoon back to life. It now maintains the trail, runs docent programs, and keeps the nature center open seven days a week.
