Before the rest of Big Sur wakes up, the Big Sur River is yours. Fernwood's grounds run right along the riverbank, and first light through the redwood canopy turns the water silver. Follow the footpath downstream past tent cabins still sleeping, listen for the water ouzels, and find your way to the natural swimming hole: a wide, gentle pool tucked between mossy boulders that locals have been cooling off in for generations. In summer the water is clear and cold and perfect. In winter it's high and rushing and just as good to watch.
OPERATOR STORY
Fernwood has stewarded this stretch of the Big Sur River since 1932 and maintains direct access to a natural swimming hole just steps from the campground, one of the most refreshing spots in all of Big Sur in summer. The river is right there, free to any guest, and it is the simplest thing Fernwood offers.
