EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION

The Carmel Mission Basilica is arguably the most historically significant site on the Monterey Peninsula — founded by Father Junipero Serra in 1770, it served as headquarters for the entire California mission system. Serra is buried beneath the sanctuary floor, and the museum holds the largest collection of Serra-period artifacts in the state. The stone church, its arched courtyard, and gardens are best visited in the afternoon when the light falls directly into the nave and tour groups thin. The adjacent cemetery, with its simple wooden and stone markers, is one of the more quietly moving places in Carmel.

OPERATOR STORY

The Carmel Mission was founded by Father Junipero Serra in 1770 and served as administrative headquarters for the California Mission chain. One of only two California missions elevated to Minor Basilica status by the Vatican, with Serra buried beneath the sanctuary floor. The Diocese of Monterey operates the mission as an active parish alongside a museum, with restoration work ongoing since the 1880s. The grounds hold the largest collection of Serra-era artifacts in California.
