EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION
Carmel River State Beach sits at the southern end of Carmel Bay where the Carmel River meets the Pacific, forming a protected lagoon that serves as critical stopover habitat for migratory shorebirds and is home year-round to snowy plovers, great blue herons, and occasional river otters. Almost entirely unknown to day visitors who concentrate at Carmel Beach further north, this wild coastal edge has no fee and no facilities: just an undeveloped shoreline with the Santa Lucia ridgeline lit behind and Point Lobos visible to the south.
OPERATOR STORY
Carmel River State Beach is managed by California State Parks as a protected coastal preserve. The lagoon is jointly overseen with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service as habitat for the threatened western snowy plover. No fee, no facilities — a true undeveloped coastal edge.
