EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION
Old Town Eureka's streets hold one of the most intact Victorian streetscapes in California, a neighborhood where the 19th century is still standing and in use. The Carson Mansion anchors the east end: an 18-room Queen Anne completed in 1886, with hand-carved woodwork from 100 different tree species, widely considered the finest example of the style in the United States. The circuit from Old Town to the Mansion and back is about a mile and takes under an hour.
OPERATOR STORY
Old Town Eureka's Victorian streetscape is one of the largest intact collections of the style in the United States, a direct legacy of the timber wealth generated during Eureka's 19th-century boom. The Carson Mansion, built in 1886 for lumber baron William Carson, is considered the finest Queen Anne Victorian in the country and anchors the east end of the district. The Old Town Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
