There are fancier places to eat in Big Sur, but none with the Fernwood Tavern's depth of character. This is where the canyon's residents, park rangers, lighthouse keepers, artists, trail crew, actually go when the week is done. On Saturday nights a live band sets up on the back deck surrounded by redwoods, and the whole campground gravitates toward the sound. Get there early enough for a table outside, order the pizza or a burger, and let a local beer slow everything down.

The Fernwood Tavern has been Big Sur's living room since 1932, the place where locals, artists, writers, and travelers have always ended up at the end of the day. Live bands play most Saturday nights under the redwoods on the back deck. Big Sur has always drawn people a little outside the ordinary, and the Fernwood Tavern has been their gathering point since the beginning.
