EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION

Garland Ranch Regional Park covers 4,462 acres at the eastern edge of Carmel Valley Village, where the valley floor meets the Santa Lucia foothills. Trails range from flat riparian walks through valley oak savanna and willow woodland along the Carmel River to a shaded canyon trail through redwood and fern, to the demanding climb to Snively’s Ridge with panoramic views of the Monterey Peninsula. The park is managed by the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District, free of charge, and open daily from sunrise to sunset. In the early morning, before the valley heat builds, the lower trails have the unhurried quality of a place that belongs to the people who live here — birdsong, creek sound, and the oaks closing overhead within minutes of the trailhead.

OPERATOR STORY

Garland Ranch Regional Park has been managed by the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District since 1975, when the Garland family donated the land to preserve it from development. At 4,462 acres, it is the largest park in the district and one of the most ecologically diverse properties on the Monterey Peninsula, spanning valley floor riparian woodland, oak savanna, chaparral, and the Santa Lucia ridgeline. The park is free, open daily from sunrise to sunset, and genuinely off the tourist circuit.
