EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION
Lovers Cove Marine Preserve is a short walk from downtown Avalon, and Wet Spot Rentals sets you up with a kayak or snorkel gear right at the Avalon boat landing. The cove is a protected marine reserve, which means the kelp forest here is intact, the Garibaldi are everywhere, and the water is clear enough to see the bottom in fifteen feet. Paddle out in the early morning before the day-trippers arrive and the cove stays remarkably quiet. Sit-on-top ocean kayaks require no experience. Snorkel gear includes mask, fins, and wetsuit if you want one. Plan two hours minimum.
OPERATOR STORY
Wet Spot Rentals has been running kayak, paddleboard, and snorkel rentals out of Avalon since 1991, making them one of the oldest continuously operating outdoor outfitters on the island. Their booth sits at the Avalon boat landing and their guides know every current and kelp formation in the cove.
