Mal Coombs Park

Address

1176 Lower Pacific Dr

Whitethorn, CA 95589

Experience Type

Water & Coastal

EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION

Mal Coombs Park's intertidal zone is one of the most intact and accessible tide pool environments on the Northern California coast. Low tide exposes a broad rocky shelf where ochre sea stars, purple sea urchins, hermit crabs, and giant green anemones occupy the same pools they have for centuries, with no interpretive signs, no scheduled tours, and no crowds. The black sand beach below connects directly to the park's shoreline, making this an immediate extension of the coastline rather than a destination requiring a car. The tide pools here have never been heavily visited.

OPERATOR STORY

Mal Coombs Park is a Humboldt County park maintained as a passive natural recreation area within the Shelter Cove community. Shelter Cove's remoteness, accessible only via a single narrow mountain road, is the tide pools' best protection.
