Encinitas, CA 92024

Experience Type

Nature & Wildlife

EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION

Moonlight State Beach is wide, relatively uncrowded before 9am, and faces west for long views toward La Jolla and the open Pacific. Surfers paddle out at first light, dog walkers loop the blufftop path above, and the whole scene moves at a relaxed local rhythm that is distinct from the more crowded beaches to the south. Consistent surf and a broad sandy expanse make it genuinely useful as a morning beach, not just a scenic one.

OPERATOR STORY

Moonlight State Beach is managed by the City of Encinitas and has been a community gathering place since the early 1900s, when locals held moonlit picnics on this stretch of sand, the origin of its name. It sits at the base of the bluff below downtown Encinitas and remains one of the most beloved public beaches in North San Diego County.
