EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION
Six galleries walk you through a century of American music, from marches and ragtime through jazz, folk, and rock, with original instruments, interactive audio stations, and cases full of artifacts that defined each era. The hands-on rooms let you pick up instruments from different periods and actually play them, which makes the whole experience land differently than a standard exhibition. Live concerts and workshops happen regularly throughout the year. Budget two hours if you want to spend real time with the interactive displays; the museum is small enough to feel intimate but rich enough to fill an afternoon.
OPERATOR STORY
The Museum of Making Music is a program division of the NAMM Foundation, a nonprofit that has supported music education and access since 1998. Opened to the public in 2000, it was built to celebrate the people who make, sell, and use musical instruments, and it has since become one of the most distinctive cultural institutions in North County San Diego. All admission revenue supports the foundation's mission to make music-making a central part of daily life.
