EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION

The Newport Pier extends over the surf at the north end of the Balboa Peninsula boardwalk, its wide concrete deck open early to fishermen casting lines and morning walkers with the water on three sides. Just north of the pier, the Dory Fishing Fleet arrives most mornings and sells fresh catch directly off the sand, small wooden boats hauled up the beach, fish laid out on ice, buyers choosing by the pound.

OPERATOR STORY

The Newport Beach Boardwalk runs along the Balboa Peninsula from the Newport Pier south toward Balboa Village, one of Southern California's oldest and most intact beach promenades. The Newport Pier itself dates to 1888, making it among the earliest piers on the California coast. The Dory Fishing Fleet, a working fleet of small boats that has sold fresh catch directly off the beach since 1891, still operates just north of the pier most mornings, one of the last remaining traditions of its kind on the entire West Coast.
