EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION

The Presidio occupies 1,500 acres at the northwest tip of San Francisco, where the bay meets the Pacific and the Golden Gate Bridge rises from the headlands. Trails drop through cypress and eucalyptus groves to Baker Beach, wind along bluffs above the water, and pass through the Tennessee Hollow watershed and restored wetlands. The Tunnel Tops park opens the interior to broad lawns and views across to Marin. Morning in the Presidio is quiet and cool, with fog burning off the ridgelines and the bridge emerging above the trees as you walk.

OPERATOR STORY

The Presidio of San Francisco is managed by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, one of the most visited units in the national park system. Established as a military post in 1776, it operated continuously as a U.S. Army base until 1994, when it transferred to the NPS and began a decades-long restoration of its natural landscape, historic buildings, and shoreline trails.
