EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION

Running Iron fills a low-slung building on East Carmel Valley Road with four decades of the valley on its walls: saddles, boots, spurs, old photographs, and ranch tools covering every surface from floor to rafter. The menu runs to steaks, ribs, burgers, and a full bar, and on weekend evenings a live band fills the room with the kind of sound that makes it easy to understand why this place has been the village's gathering spot since 1980. The outdoor patio is dog-friendly and open to the valley sunshine in the afternoon; inside, the saloon stays lively well into the evening.

OPERATOR STORY

Running Iron started as a cowboy bar called the Stirrup Cup, a ranchers' meeting place with a reputation for rowdiness that served the working valley for decades before a dining room was added in 1980 and the name changed. It has been a family restaurant and saloon ever since, independently owned and rooted in the ranching and agricultural identity that defines this stretch of valley. Live music on weekends has been part of the experience for years, making it the village's most durable community gathering place.
