Vesuvio sits at the corner of 6th and Junipero in Carmel-by-the-Sea, and is as close to a neighborhood restaurant as this village offers. The Pepe family — Neapolitan by origin, New Jersey by way of, Carmel by choice — has built the menu around a wood-burning pizza oven, house-made ravioli and pasta, and produce from Central Coast farms. The rotating carte changes with what’s in season, and the downstairs bar draws a reliably local crowd. It is not a tourist destination in the way many Carmel restaurants are; it is a place the people who live here actually go.
