EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION
Will Rogers State Beach runs north from the mouth of Santa Monica Canyon toward Malibu, a long wide stretch of sand that draws far fewer crowds than the Santa Monica Pier beach to the south. In the early morning the beach is nearly empty, the canyon light is soft, and the walk down through the neighborhood’s streets is pleasant: old California bungalows, mature trees, and almost no foot traffic. The bike path north along the coast starts here and runs uninterrupted toward Malibu for miles.
OPERATOR STORY
Will Rogers State Beach is managed jointly by California State Parks and Los Angeles County Beaches and Harbors, stretching north from the mouth of Santa Monica Canyon toward Malibu. The beach takes its name from the adjacent Will Rogers State Historic Park on the Palisades above. The canyon-to-beach corridor here is one of the last stretches of the LA coast where the transition from residential neighborhood to open sand happens on foot rather than through a parking structure.
