PROPERTY DESCRIPTION

Open since 1934 on the banks of the Big Sur River, Big Sur River Inn is the original gathering place of the Big Sur community, a low-key, log-and-stone inn with Adirondack chairs parked directly in the river's cool current and a bar that has served locals and road-trippers for generations. The 20 rooms are simple and honest, and the restaurant's Sunday brunch has been a ritual for Big Sur residents for decades. It has none of the aspirational polish of newer properties along Highway 1, and that's precisely why it earns the community's deepest loyalty: it belongs to the place in a way that more recent arrivals don't.

OWNER STORY

Big Sur River Inn has been on this site since 1934, the first hotel on this stretch of Highway 1. The family that owns it today bought it in 1988; in 2023 the second generation took over, one of the rare places where the next generation chose to stay. They have kept what matters: the chairs in the river, the Sunday live music, the general store. The inn donates a dollar per night to the Big Sur Health Center, matched dollar-for-dollar, and has supported the Fire Brigade and local schools through drought, wildfire, and road closures. The family doesn't own a portfolio. They own this place, and the difference shows.
