PROPERTY DESCRIPTION
Originally built as the Rio Carmelo Motor Court in 1934 during the heyday of roadside travel, Carmel River Inn has evolved into a collection of 46 freestanding cottages and glamping tents set along the Carmel River, steps from the Highway 1 gateway to Big Sur. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is less than a mile away. The property has the feel of a well-tended summer camp, with mature oaks, a creek-side footpath, and fire rings that make it feel genuinely tied to the landscape rather than placed on it. It's one of the few lodging options in Carmel that still captures the spirit of the original California road trip.OWNER STORY
Carmel River Inn was purchased in 2014 by a small group of individual partners, with the general partner serving as active operator and controlling member. The acquisition was a long-term commitment built on a genuine belief in what independent travel can mean. The 2021–2022 renovation tells the story: new beds, flooring, and finishes across all 46 units, new studio cottages, a glamping cabin, none of it cosmetic. The operation runs through Silver Lining Hospitality, a management company the owner founded and solely owns, with no third-party clients. Every decision that shapes this property flows from one person with a genuine stake in it.
