Casa Laguna's hillside was developed in the 1920s by architect Arthur Benton and by the 1930s had become an informal artists' colony drawn to its Catalina tile, Mission Revival buildings, and the quality of Pacific light. That accumulated character is hard to manufacture, and it's what distinguishes this property from boutiques built to look like it. Villa Carlotta LLC, a private investor group, acquired it in 2014 and brought in Common Thread Hotels to reposition it. A 2017 renovation layered bold pattern against the original tilework and moved the pool to the cliff's edge.
