PROPERTY DESCRIPTION

A Bavarian-style chateau perched on a hillside above Carmel-by-the-Sea, Hofsas House has been owned and operated by the same family since 1947, now in its fourth generation. The property's signature welcome mural, painted by Maxine Albro in 1957, sets the tone: whimsical, European, deeply personal. Many of the 38 rooms have private balconies with ocean views, and the heated pool and dry sauna make it a genuine retreat. The family's long tenure shows in the details: locally roasted coffee, handpicked furnishings, and an owner who knows her regulars by name.

OWNER STORY

Hofsas House was founded in the late 1940s by the woman whose name it carries, who moved from Los Angeles to Carmel, began renting three hillside cottages, and built what she had into a 25-room hotel by 1957. The welcome mural commissioned from artist Maxine Albro still marks the facade. The hotel passed through two more generations before the founder's granddaughter took it over in 2000, having grown up working here. She has continued her grandmother's commitment to local arts, sourcing local coffee and chocolates, and keeping the property as a family-scale operation with no brand affiliation.
