PROPERTY DESCRIPTION
Built in 1856 as the finest brick structure in the Sierra mining camps, the National Exchange Hotel is the anchor of Nevada City's Gold Rush streetscape and one of the longest continuously operating hotels in California. The three-story Victorian building, California Historical Landmark #899, survived seven fires that destroyed most of the surrounding town. Acme Hospitality's 2019 to 2021 restoration returned it to a standard not seen in a century, with period wallpaper, antique furnishings (some original to the hotel), and a bar cast from the building's own salvaged cast-iron radiators.OWNER STORY
The National Exchange Hotel opened on August 20, 1856, and has operated continuously ever since, making it one of the oldest hotels west of the Rockies and California Historical Landmark #899. The building survived seven fires that destroyed most of the surrounding town. Mark Twain, Ulysses S. Grant, and Jack London all passed through. Acme Hospitality acquired the hotel in 2019 with a focus on culturally significant California properties that need a steward rather than a developer, and completed a floor-to-rafters renovation in 2021 using local designers, artists, and craftspeople.
