PROPERTY DESCRIPTION

The oldest continually operating hotel in Carmel-by-the-Sea, the Pine Inn opened in 1889 and anchors Ocean Avenue with a Victorian presence that feels both historic and lived-in. The lobby's warm wood tones and period details give way to 49 traditionally furnished rooms, and the on-site Il Fornaio restaurant is a long-standing fixture of the Carmel dining scene. The building carries so much architectural and civic history that it remains one of the more authentic expressions of Carmel's origins, four blocks from the beach, on the village's main street.

OWNER STORY

Pine Inn has been owned by its current proprietor since 1986, the hotel's longest single period of private ownership in its 135-plus-year history. The owner also holds the Tally Ho Inn two blocks away and the Santa Barbara Inn, operating under the Cal-Am Properties umbrella. Built in 1889, Pine Inn was the first hotel in what would become Carmel-by-the-Sea and has been designated a historical resource by the city. The building has outlasted countless changes in the village, and the owner's long stewardship of two of Carmel's most historically significant small hotels reflects a clear commitment to keeping them independent.
