PROPERTY DESCRIPTION

The Tahoe Star Hotel occupies one of the oldest buildings in Truckee, a timber-era boarding house built in 1867 by George Schaffer for his lumber mill workers, and operating as a hotel since 1871. A local contractor and historic preservationist restored the building using photographs from 1880 as a blueprint, salvaging original doors and matching materials to the century-old fabric throughout. Eight rooms, each individually appointed, sit above the Truckee River on West River Street, a short walk from the Amtrak station, the Truckee River Legacy Trail, and the restaurants and shops of Commercial Row. The owners are typically on property.

OWNER STORY

Tahoe Star Hotel is one of the oldest buildings still standing in Truckee, built by timberman George Schaffer in 1867 to board his lumber mill workers and operating as a hotel since 1871. The building sat dormant for decades before the current owners, a local contractor and preservationist who had already completed six other historic restorations in downtown Truckee, acquired it in 2007. The restoration took years, guided by photographs from 1880, salvaging original doors and matching new materials to the century-old fabric throughout. The hotel finally opened to guests around 2021, pandemic delays included. The couple now owns and operates it together, frequently on property and welcoming guests personally.
