The Tally Ho began as Pine Inn overflow cottages in the early 1900s. In 1945, cartoonist Jimmy Hatlo hired Hugh Comstock, Carmel's fairy-tale architect, to transform it into a private mansion, and Comstock's carved newel post still defines the lobby today. The property was acquired in 1993 by the same ownership group that holds the Pine Inn across the street, and both properties operate under Cal-Am Properties with no brand affiliation, a small long-held portfolio of historically significant Carmel lodging. Thirty-plus years of stewardship across both properties reflects a consistent commitment to keeping Carmel's independent lodging heritage intact.
